Stop Work Authority Program

When Safety Is in Question, Stop Work.

At Power Link Utilities, every employee and contract worker has the right and responsibility to stop work when they identify a condition or behavior that could result in an unwanted event.

No job is so urgent or important that safety, health, or environmental protection should be compromised.

Your Authority to Stop

If you believe a task or situation presents an undue risk to yourself, your coworkers, the public, or the environment, you are expected to take action.

Stop work. Speak up. Make it safe.

Stop Work Authority applies to all employees and contract workers, regardless of position or job title.

How Stop Work Authority Works

When an unsafe condition or behavior is identified, the Stop Work intervention should:

1. Stop

Immediately pause the work when a potential safety, health, or environmental concern is identified.

2. Notify

Notify your supervisor and all affected personnel about the stop-work concern.

3. Discuss

Address the concern in a professional and positive manner. Everyone involved should understand what created the potential risk.

4. Correct

Take the necessary steps to eliminate or control the unsafe condition or behavior.

5. Verify

Confirm that appropriate controls are in place and that it is safe to continue.

6. Resume

Work may resume once the concern has been addressed and safe working conditions have been established.

No Retaliation for Speaking Up

Stop Work Authority is a fundamental part of our safety culture.

Employees and contract workers should never hesitate to raise a legitimate safety, health, or environmental concern. Stopping work to address a potential hazard is the right thing to do.

Safety Comes First

At Power Link Utilities and its operating companies:

  • No activity takes priority over safety.

  • No deadline justifies accepting an unacceptable risk.

  • No employee should feel pressured to work in an unsafe condition.

  • Every person has the authority and responsibility to speak up.

  • Work resumes only when the identified concern has been properly addressed.

STOP WORK. SPEAK UP. MAKE IT SAFE.

Your decision to stop work could prevent an injury, protect a coworker, or prevent an unwanted event.
